Abstract Among the high-performance and engineering polymers, polyimides closely related polyetherimide (PEI) stand out by their capability to react with nucleophiles under relatively mild conditions. By targeting phthalimide groups in chain backbone, post-functionalization offers a pathway adjust surface properties such as hydrophilicity, solvent resistance, porosity. Here, we use ultrathin PEI films on Langmuir trough model system investigate functionalization ethylene diamine tetrakis(4-aminophenyl)porphyrin multivalent nucleophiles. means of AFM, Raman spectroscopy, interfacial rheology, show that hydrolysis enhances chemical mechanical stability allows for formation EDC/NHS-activated esters. Direct amidation was achieved presence Lewis acid catalyst, resulting free amine rather than cross-linking. When comparing hydrolysis, find greater influence latter material properties.
